ASQ Calgary Successfully Conducted Strategic Planning Sessions
In April, eighteen ASQ members (ASQ Executive and non-Executive) gathered at DeVry (after work) to go through the Strategic Planning Process, facilitated by Jim Roscoe, Government of Alberta.
ASQ Executive Committee was pleasantly surprised by the overwhelming support from the ASQ community when a request to participate in shaping the future of ASQ Calgary was posted on the ASQ website. The planning coordinator had to turn down some last minute requests, fearing the group might be too big to be effective.
Opening up the Strategic Planning sessions to the ASQ community turned out to be a very smart move. ASQ members provided much input into these strategic planning evenings.
Jim Roscoe works for the Community Development Branch of Alberta Culture and Community Spirit. He goes around helping non-profit organizations conduct successful strategic planning sessions. It is amazing to see how the process works. The process is called "The Drivers Model", personally, it's similar in concept to "current state" and "future state" in Lean Six Sigma terminology.
The Drivers Model process:
a. Situation Analysis
b. Develop Vision
c. Define goals
d. Define mission
e. Develop objectives
f. Identify critical success factors
g. Identify barriers
h. Develop strategies
i. Document activities
j. Monitoring and evaluating
k. Review and close
6 hours and eleven PapaJohns' pizzas later, several plans were drafted. Bits and pieces of ideas were coming together that look like something the Executive Committee can take away to develop tasks and solidifies strategies (or "projects).
There were good synergy throughout the planning sessions and a couple of people expressed interest in joining the Executive Committee. We are well on our way in achieving one of the strategic goals - increase volunteer participation.
Thank you Jim, this is definitely a fun event (another strategic goal achieved).
